History note
The relation a² + b² = c² is stated in the
Baudhayana Sulba Sutra (around 800 BCE) of ancient India.
Baudhayana described it for the diagonal of a rectangle:
“The diagonal produces both the areas which the length and breadth produce separately.”
This is several centuries before Pythagoras (c. 570–495 BCE).
